Sue Vingerhoets
Crafting Beauty from the Byproducts of Consumption

Sue Vingerhoets is a contemporary artist whose practice is deeply rooted in sustainability and a profound commitment to minimizing waste. Working primarily with reclaimed fabric and other discarded materials, she transforms what society labels as consumer waste into objects of poignant beauty and thoughtful commentary. Her art is not just a visual experience; it is a tangible expression of her core ethos: the urgent need for humanity to tread lighter on the planet.

This series is not just about representing a landscape but about really seeing our surroundings . Being in the moment.
A part of it, not apart from it and therefore taking/owning the responsibility of our presence.
I hope to evoke a sense of wonder for the places we recognise and with which we have a connection.
The different fabrics remind us that the view we are seeing is not a flat one dimensional plane but a rich and varied landscape of texture and colour.
Perhaps seeing through new eyes, the colours we thought we knew.
Let these remind you of the special place you chose and the realisation that you are a part of it.

The Art of Transformation and Rebirth
Vingerhoets's studio is a space of metamorphosis, where the detritus of modern life is given a new narrative. She meticulously sources materials—old garments, textile scraps, packaging, and other consumer byproducts—that carry the history of their former use. Through techniques such as piecing, stitching, layering, and manipulation, she coaxes these forgotten materials into sculptural forms, intricate wall hangings, and functional objects.
Her work stands as a direct challenge to the "take-make-dispose" cycle of mass consumption. By investing time and skillful effort into materials that would otherwise contribute to landfills, Vingerhoets imbues them with value and permanence. This process of artistic resurrection highlights the inherent beauty and potential longevity often overlooked in the rush of consumer culture.
